Philadelphia Alley - Charleston, SC - Heather Johnson Photography

One of my favorite places to photograph outdoor portraits, its charlestons hidden gem. Philadelphia Alley is a charming, historic passageway tucked away in Charleston, South Carolina. Located between Queen Street and Cumberland Street in the French Quarter, this narrow alleyway is lined with cobblestones, vintage brickwork, and beautiful, ivy-covered walls. Known for its peaceful, old-world charm, Philadelphia Alley offers a glimpse into Charleston’s past and is a popular spot for photography and quiet strolls. Originally called “Cow’s Alley” in the 18th century, the passage was later renamed in honor of Philadelphia after a devastating fire destroyed much of the area in 1796, and residents of Philadelphia contributed funds to help with reconstruction. Today, it holds stories of Charleston’s history, including tales of duels that were once fought there. Philadelphia Alley is a hidden gem that invites visitors to experience Charleston’s rich history and architecture away from the bustling main streets.
